Collecting Q & A: Ullage problems with a Château d'Yquem 2001

Q:Recently, I acquired a bottle of Château d'Yquem 2001, which I know has a long cellaring life. When I first got it, the bottle was full. Recently, though, I noticed a loss in volume of about 15ml. I think it was because I moved the bottle from cellar temperature to room temperature for a week. Am I still able to continue cellaring the wine, or should I drink it soon? — Shawn, Singapore

A: According to Wine Spectator's tasting note for this wine, your 2001 Château d'Yquem is best consumed after 2012. Clearly the ullage situation is a function of the fluctuation in temperature of your storage rooms. The 15ml (0.6-inch) shrinkage problem could be arrested if you place the bottle in a proper temperature- and humidity-controlled storage facility. Maybe a friend or a retailer can help loan you space in their cellar? Otherwise, find the coolest spot in your home and leave it there, monitoring the situation from time to time.
