A Sit Down with Michel Friou of Chile's Viña Almaviva
Posted: 10:27 AM ET, 10/22/08
While he may not be a household name, Michel Friou might be the envy of his winemaking peers in Chile. Why?
Well, first off, he’s the head winemaker at Viña Almaviva, the Rothschild-Concha y Toro joint venture. That means he gets to work in a well-appointed winery while sourcing fruit from the Puente Alto vineyard, one of the top spots in Chile for producing Cabernet Sauvignon-based reds (both Concha y Toro's Don Melchor and Viñedo Chadwick are produced from this area). As the Tuscan Harvest Ends, we Recognize our Staff's Hard Work

Last Sunday, we celebrated the end of harvest 2008 together with our staff from all three estates. Temperatures hit 84°F at our Maremma estate, where we held the celebration. A blue sky and a crystal clear view over the coast all the way out to the isles of Elba and Corsica made for a perfect setting. Read more

Six vats of my Domaine la Barroche 2008 Châteauneuf-du-Pape are fermenting in the cellar, in other words, six babies are in incubators … some are precocious, some take their time, and others don’t miss a beat. Read more

Where to Dine When You're New in Town
Posted: 02:00 PM ET, 10/21/08
Choosing a restaurant in a city that’s new to you presents its own set of challenges.
On my recent trip from Napa to New York I spent a Saturday night in Oakland in order to catch an early flight the next morning and decided to scout out Jack London Square for dinner. Read more

Donning the Marketing Hat for My Wine's Label

Among the many people I caught up with during the New York Wine Experience these past few days was Brian Loring, who while pouring his tasty Clos Pepe vineyard Pinot, chastised me for not giving more updates on my barrel of Syrah...so here’s an update on the JM Syrah. Read more

All We Need Is Love
Posted: 08:44 AM ET, 10/20/08
Restaurants are going to have to give their customers a lot of love in these difficult economic times, especially if the places are serving wine lovers like you and me. Otherwise, we will simply not go there any more. Spending a lot of money in a restaurant has to include everything and more these days. Read more

Pinots on Parade
Posted: 12:15 PM ET, 10/18/08
By coincidence, the first three presentations at the California Wine Experience in New York gave us a quick world tour of Pinot Noir. My colleague Bruce Sanderson started with a Burgundy tasting, followed by columnist Matt Kramer offering tastes of three Pinots from New Zealand, Oregon and the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. Rage Against the Jack Stem

We totally destem all our fruit before fermenting. Why? It probably comes from my dislike of vegetables, so anything that looks like a vegetable has no business being in our wine. Read more

Not a Vacation, Per Se

As we continue to enjoy fair skies and dry weather in Oregon, the harvest has become extended, meaning that vintners can take their time bringing in fruit. This allows vineyards to fully ripen their crops, yet, because of the cool weather and even colder nights, physiological ripeness does not necessarily mean high sugars and low acids. Read more

A Sit Down with Patrick d’Aulan of Argentina’s Alta Vista
Posted: 04:12 PM ET, 10/15/08
Patrick d’Aulan is the tall, energetic, loquacious owner of Alta Vista, located in Argentina’s Mendoza region. I sat down with d’Aulan today to talk about his winery’s newest cuvée.
D’Aulan was among the wave of outside investment that got into Argentina before the economic meltdown, setting up shop in the Uco Valley with partner Jean-Michel Arcaute, Michel Rolland and others in 1999. Read more
