Prepping for the Debate
Posted: 03:54 PM ET, 10/02/08
Thursday is date night, as some of you may remember. Nancy and I always go out, taking a break from the kids and other worldy concerns to enjoy a little wine and food …
Tonight, however, date night will be spent in front of the TV, watching the vice-presidential debate. Read more

Disciplined Buying Has Its Rewards
Posted: 02:23 PM ET, 10/02/08
Taking a disciplined approach to buying wine is something I admire and something everyone should consider.
One of my longtime friends, Dan, used to draw the line on buying a bottle of wine at $10 or $15, and always found bargains. Of course that was about 15 years ago, and I’m not sure if he still has a cap on purchases these days. Read more

Last Saturday, we completed the 2008 harvest in the Maremma. All the grapes are now in the cellar, and it is a good feeling that nature has little impact anymore—everything lies in our hands now. Read more

Posted: 02:50 PM ET, 10/01/08

Starting with one of the worst frosts in California in decades, to the crazy heat spell we saw at the end of August, to the potential for some nasty rain in Oregon, 2008 maybe be one of the weirdest vintages in recent memory. Thank God for fog. We all enjoyed waking up to fog a couple of weeks ago. It was exactly the type of weather we needed. The grapes have enjoyed an extended period of cool to mild temperatures that has realigned the flavors and sugars. Read more

The Stock Market and Birthday Wishes
Posted: 12:55 PM ET, 09/30/08
I am recovering from three days of birthday celebrations at my house in Tuscany. I celebrated my 50th. Yes, I am a half of a century old now. I drank a number of 1958s and I have to say that I think I am aging better than any of them, except for the 1958 Sandeman Vintage Port. Read more

Fruit Bombs and Food, or Not
Posted: 12:47 PM ET, 09/30/08
One recurring theme whenever the topic of New World wines comes up is the perception of some that so-called "fruit bombs" do not go well with food. This strikes me as today's virulent version of the old saw that wine must be dry to go with food. Read more
