I’m lucky to work in an industry where I don’t have to do the same thing all year long. In my previous life as a software engineer, every day was pretty much the same: Go to work, sit in a cubicle and write software. Read more

The Essence of Tokaj
Posted: 10:22 AM ET, 08/27/08
Patrick d’Aulan of Château Dereszla in Hungary’s Tokaj region was in the United States on vacation and stopped by our office to show me the latest releases of the estate’s two Eszencias.
Both are from the superb 2000 vintage, a year d’Aulan calls “one of the best vintages of the last century,” and along with 1993, the best contemporary vintage since the fall of the Communist-controlled production there. Read more

A Dizzying Mix of California Cabernet Styles
Posted: 02:13 PM ET, 08/26/08
As someone who reviews a lot of California Cabernets—nearly 800 in the past year alone—I know how hard it is to sum up the character and quality of a given vintage.
There’s a lot of diversity out there in wine styles. Some is due to variations in the growing season. Read more

Great Men and Women, Great Barolos
Posted: 01:10 PM ET, 08/25/08
I spent most of last week in Piedmont, visiting some of the top wineries and vineyards in Barolo, Barbaresco and Dolcetto di Dogliani, and it reinforced my admiration for the vine growers and winemakers in the regions.
They have to be so dedicated to work the steep hillside vineyards of the region, regardless if they are planted to Nebbiolo, Barbera or Dolcetto. Read more

Developments at Henry's Drive
Posted: 11:56 AM ET, 08/25/08
Kim Longbottom, who started Henry's Drive in Padthaway, Australia, with her husband, Mark, recently stopped by for a visit and brought along some of their first wines to show me how they are developing.
They planted their first vineyards in 1992, continuing through the 1990s to reach almost 500 acres. Read more

Time for Some R & R

After spending the last eight weeks tasting through a large number of Rhône and Argentine wines (as well as wines from the Loire, Chile and South Africa too), I managed to file my annual tasting report on those two regions, as well as additional stories on Patagonia and Côte-Rôtie. Read more

Aussie Whites: Some Thoughts on Style
Posted: 02:00 PM ET, 08/21/08

Granted, these were mostly wines that had scored well in the past with me, such as Leeuwin Estate Art Series from Margaret River, Shaw and Smith M3 from Adelaide Hills and Giaconda from Victoria, with several ringers to keep me honest. Read more
