Things to Be Thankful For
Posted: 12:59 PM ET, 11/26/08
Remembering that the purpose of Thanksgiving Day actually is to give thanks for what we have and share it with friends and family, not just eat a ton of turkey and nap through a football game on TV, I have been adding things up in my mind.
Like everyone else, I am daunted by the current financial crisis, which threatens to change our standards of living for some time to come. Read more

The New Deal: A Drinker's Market
Posted: 10:11 AM ET, 11/26/08
The figures are mind-boggling. I read the International Herald Tribune every day, and I just can't get my head around the amount of money our government is spending to try to right a completely broken financial system. Read more

Where Have All the Diners Gone?

I had a fabulous lunch at Oviedo Monday. Chipirones a la plancha and the unbelievably tender and delicately flavored Scottish Black Face lamb from La Biznaguita farm.
The wine I ordered was less impressive: Bodega Mendel’s Unus Mendoza 2005 (218 pesos, about US$65). Read more

The Turkey Day Wine Lineup
Posted: 04:02 PM ET, 11/25/08
Well, my post prior to last year's Thanksgiving seemed to pull people out of the woodwork, so we might as well make it an annual thing.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday: football and food stretched out over a few days. For the main event on Thursday evening, the menu is pretty standard. Read more

Thanksgiving Brunch and Grill with Ernest Gallo
Posted: 03:14 PM ET, 11/25/08
A few years ago, when I had relatives living in Modesto, Calif., I had a most unusual Thanksgiving Day brunch with Ernest Gallo at his home in that San Joaquin Valley city.
He and I had been talking about wine matters one day and he asked me when I would next be in Modesto. Read more

Saint Bart's Day 3: All Rosé, All the Time

After breakfast, Nancy kept her promise to me to return to Absolutely Wine, where we grabbed another bottle before heading to the beach at Les Salines. Luckily owner Jean-Baptist Barre had two plastic cups for us, his last two. I opted this time for a bottle of the Domaine de Rimauresq Côtes de Provence Rosé R 2007 (made from a blend of the estate’s old-vine Grenache and Cinsault, along with some Tibouren and Rolle). Once harvest is completed, you might think that the work in the vineyards comes to a standstill. The grapes are all in the cellar, and we can't start pruning the vines after they have lost all their leaves and after their sap has retreated back into the roots and they go into "hibernation. A Steady Diet of Tango, Steak and Malbec
Posted: 11:46 AM ET, 11/24/08
At nine a.m. Monday morning it's already too hot to sit outside and finish my coffee. It's my third day now in Buenos Aires and each seems to be warmer than the last. I'm on vacation, back in one of my favorite cities, for a week of Tango, carne and Malbec. Read more

Monday Morning Reality Check

I am still recuperating at home in Tuscany. It's gray, cold and rainy today. Not much to celebrate. But I am feeling better than last week. Might even have a glass of wine tonight.
Over the weekend, I was thinking about a story about a California cult wine I heard from a retailer friend of mine in the States. Read more
