The Working Person's Wine...
Posted: 09:59 AM ET, August 30, 2006
Labor Day is approaching, which means the summer is ending (sad), but the kids are going back the school (whew!).
It won't be long before the grill is covered up for winter and the vegetable garden is a pile of mulch. This is the last long weekend we get to open up some really good stuff before we trudge our way to the year-end holidays. Read more
Looking For The Tiger Woods of Wine...
Posted: 04:08 PM ET, August 28, 2006
With his win this past weekend, Tiger Woods continued his amazing run - four straight. He did it in the pouring rain, too.
(On a side note, I advanced out of the qualifying round in my club championship, playing in the pouring rain on Sunday as well). Read more
The Cure For The Monday Night Blahs...
Posted: 10:44 AM ET, August 24, 2006
On Monday night, I was at a Rhône tasting at New York’s Tribeca Grill.
It started at 5:30. I got there at 5:35, and I was not the first person in the room. Not by a long shot. By 6:00, the place was packed. And this was not a casual drinking crowd either, there for people-watching and the buffet of cheese cubes. Read more
Surprised By What Is (And Isn't) In My Cellar...
Posted: 01:35 PM ET, August 21, 2006
Every six months, I do an inventory on my cellar, if for nothing else than to catch all those bottles that I forgot I actually drank, ahem.
It’s been eye-opening for me to see how my cellar has changed over the last two years. It’s gotten bigger of course – no surprise there (in fact my wife is starting to threaten me with great harm if I keep buying at my current pace). Read more
When Good Is Really Good

I was in Massachusetts celebrating my sister’s wedding this past weekend. After the ceremony in the Harvard Memorial Church, we all headed up to Gloucester for the reception.
During the party, I was (inevitably) asked about the wines being served – a crisp, tangy Fratelli Prà Soave Classico 2005 and a bright, refreshing Château d'Oupia Minervois Rosé 2005. Read more
Looking at Bordeaux Prices - From the Personal and Business Side
Posted: 09:52 AM ET, August 11, 2006
Spoke to Didier Virot last night at Aix. In addition to being a really good chef, Virot is also an avid and knowledgeable wine collector.
He's unhappy with the '05 Bordeaux pricing, as it seems most other folks here in the U.S. are. His perspective though is interesting, because he buys wine for himself and for his cellar at Aix - so he sees it from both the personal and business perspectives at the same time. Read more
A Sit Down With Francisco Baettig...
Posted: 10:57 AM ET, August 07, 2006
I sat down the other day with Francisco Baettig, head winemaker at Chile’s Viña Errázuriz winery, located in the Aconcagua Valley. Baettig, 36, took over the reins there in mid-2003, and the 2004 vintage is the first under his direct control. Read more
You Think It's Fun Being A Wine Critic?

Most days it is - other than being a touring golf pro, there's not much else I'd rather do in life. But some days it isn't.
Like today. The heat has finally broken in New York, and my mind is on the weekend. The sun is shining bright, and I'm dreaming about my golf game and what I'm going to drink this weekend. Read more
